I have always seen Blagojevich as the standard-bearer for malignant narcissism, not psychopathy. It's possible that I either conflate the two, or that there's so much overlap that they are difficult to separate. But consider this personal anecdote:
I used to live in Chicago, not far from the governor's mansion. I once saw Blagojevich jog right through the middle of a busy, 6-way intersection, flanked by his security detail. Motorists started honking at him to get out of the road, and he waved to them as though he thought they were honking in admiration!
For a time, he was removed from office, but not yet sent to prison. I can only assume he was forced to vacate the governor's mansion at this time, but he remained in the same neighborhood. I saw him out for a jog one more time, in the same place as before, and again he ran through the same intersection, bringing traffic to a screeching halt. This time, he had no entourage—just Blago in a track suit. Again, the cars all honked at him, and again, he waved to what he assumed were his adoring fans.
This, and his stupid poofy hair, and his general clownishness, makes me think NPD and not psycho. Blagojevich was certainly a legend in his own mind.
This fascinates me, and I hope to be able to learn more about psychopaths entering politics. What are the hurdles that they are especially adept at clearing? What are they thinking at different stages of entering politics? Do they also have well-meaning intentions? What is the satisfaction mentally? (Most people have little satisfaction in controlling others so they are naive to those who desire it, including me.) Does profession tend to attract certain personalities or psychological conditions? What are the other personalities that enter politics? In time, to people tend to become psychotic in politics? If so, what is that process?

I believe there would be a great deal of benefit for citizens to know this information. Even politicians seem naïve to the reality. "But they are such nice people." If they don't understand that, then they certainly would be naïve to the fact that their may be a psychological abnormalities.

Not sure I'd agree with that assessment. I haven't seen any evidence for psychopaths being secretly terrified, so to propose it as an underlying dynamic strikes me as putting a theory ahead of the data.
As for "falling" into the pattern, how about they're just born that way and can't do any differently?
This theory is based on research on actual cases. Hubbard even developed a method to cure the psychopath. You can imagine that not that many he encountered were willing to try it, but apparently enough to very that it was workable.
