In this workshop we discussed the sections of Chapter 4 on “ponerogenic phenomena and processes,” and “spellbinders.” Topics included:
psychopaths’ special psychological knowledge, how they get it, and how it works
normal human emotional responses and how they are manipulated
the varieties of human egotism, or needing to be right even when we’re wrong
our tendency to moralize, and when it becomes detrimental
paramoralisms, or why we can believe anything is good or bad simply through emotionally charged language
the “big lie”
how all of these come together in the figure of the “spellbinder”
and more!
During the next session, we will discuss the rest of Chapter 4 (“ponerogenic associations,” “ideologies,” etc.). For readers with the print copy, this will be pages 149-177.
