Workshop Session 7: Ponerogenic Phenomena

Next session: Ponerogenic associations and ideologies
6

In this workshop we discussed the sections of Chapter 4 on “ponerogenic phenomena and processes,” and “spellbinders.” Topics included:

  • psychopaths’ special psychological knowledge, how they get it, and how it works

  • normal human emotional responses and how they are manipulated

  • the varieties of human egotism, or needing to be right even when we’re wrong

  • our tendency to moralize, and when it becomes detrimental

  • paramoralisms, or why we can believe anything is good or bad simply through emotionally charged language

  • the “big lie”

  • how all of these come together in the figure of the “spellbinder”

  • and more!

During the next session, we will discuss the rest of Chapter 4 (“ponerogenic associations,” “ideologies,” etc.). For readers with the print copy, this will be pages 149-177.

The next session is scheduled for Saturday, January 27 at 12:30 pm.
